Simon Interviews Samlrc

Samlrc is a brazilian musician, visual artist, filmmaker and more. She recently released her album "A Lonely Sinner", changing her sound entirely from electronic shenanigans to majestic and grandiose post-rock. Yesterday I interviewed her, which you can check out right below, as well as a link to her newest album on bandcamp!

SIMON: hey Sam!! thank you for accepting the interview! how are you feeling tonight?

SAMLRC: been overwhelmed but im just chillin rn :3 good night

SIMON: good to hear that :D

SIMON: so, going straight to the first question, what music are you listening to recently?

SAMLRC: hmm been diving into some trip hop groups like massive attack and some QOTSA albums, very glad i gave them a chance its so peak

SIMON: i love massive attack!! never listened to QOTSA though, but i might give them a chance too

SAMLRC: quite hard for me to recommend something from them but i love Like Clockwork more, very good mix of emotional and angsty rock tracks, very pretty :3

SIMON: ooh, i'll check that out later, thank you!

SIMON: now onto the next question, we know your last album came out on friday and it personally blew me away. i'd like to know, what were your biggest inspirations for it? i sense a little bit of natural snow buildings and the microphones, did they play a part on the creative process?

SAMLRC: a lot actually, 'the glow pt. 2' and 'for emma forever ago' are the reason why this record exists in the first place, specially because i started building my home studio because of these projects. musically tho what inspired me the most was soundtracks for the blind and carrie and lowell!! literally the best moments on music for me specially with rock and folk..

SIMON: that actually makes a lot of sense! specially knowing your love for sufjan stevens; i'm very curious about your home studio btw! was the process hard? and how is it turning out?

SAMLRC: ngl i started building it since the beggining of 2023 so it took a year to finish although it was pretty chill, i didnt make it such a big deal for me so i was just taking my time :3 im very comfortable with what i have rn although i need some upgrades.. Sheep Theme was the first song i recorded in the process tho, took me a while to start liking my own vocals

SIMON: seems awesome, im a bit jealous, even though it took so long heh. the vocals on the album are an amazing addition, really makes it sound so more personal!

SIMON: still about your music, what's your favorite song you have ever made, and why?

SAMLRC: aww thank you!! also im a lil too harsh on criticizing myself so i dont think i have a favorite one alskdhwk but if i would pick one from the new album it would be Sinner, i love how it feels like a explosion of emotions and then it just cries into a drone, its perfect for me.

SIMON: yes!!! that one's amazing. all of them are lol, i was talking to our friend jauske about it and like, it's really hard to pick a favorite. for me it would probably be 'For M.', it gave me goosebumps, though from your whole discog my favorite is probably 'Music > Internet'

SAMLRC: ngl i started liking this track more after reading ur review, im kinda proud of producing it alksdhkw, makes me wonder if im gonna return making this style of music

SIMON: fr, it was great, but i'm glad you're doing more ambicious things now. my next question kinda ties back into this. what's your favorite instrument, and which one do you like using in music the most?

SAMLRC: never got asking myself this but id probably pick synth and bass!! synth mostly because i love messing up with sound design trying to make something unique, and bass because i love adding pedals and playing memorable basslines with it.

SIMON: hell yeah. you're really good at those and it shows!
so, i mentioned a song from your previous album Sam Is Offline_ earlier, and people might not know about the film that you made alongside it. i liked it so much that i wrote about it in my blog. i'd like to know, do you plan on making another "album movies", or just like, another film in general?

SAMLRC: id love to, but not alone again 🥴 specially cuz making long animated stuff took a lot of me mentally so i would need some help from people more experienced than me. im not having so much ideas for film stuff lately so it will take a while for me to get into it again.

SIMON: yeah, i can tell it took a lot of work. it looks very complex for something made by just one person. whenever you get back into it, i'm sure it'll turn out great! if this one is this good, i can't even imagine what you could do with help from more people.

SIMON: my next question is about something that's very apparent in your online presence: sheeps! where does your love for sheeps comes from?

SAMLRC: funny enough it came from a conversation i had with a friend that suggested me to create my own fursona.. they told me to search up animals that i relate the most and i was quite undecided with sheep and rabbits, and the final answer is what i represent rn :3

SAMLRC: after that i was quite interested in watching and searching sheep facts that i got more into them, plus i love how cute and adorable they are

SIMON: ooh, that's really cool! also, i agree about their cuteness ><

SIMON: i don't know about you but i really like words and language, so just out of curiosity, what are your favorite words, and why?

SAMLRC: hmm i dont have a clue of why i love them unless thinking of xiu xiu but i love 'forget' and 'post'. also what about yours??

SIMON: i have a whole list, but my top favorites are 'cogent', 'mosey', 'meticulous', 'ephemeral' and 'oblivious' :')

SIMON: 'post' is also great, reminds me of bjork's album and also "postcontent" which is one of my favorite youtube webseries

SAMLRC: YEESS i love that bjork record, never heard of postcontent tho but got me interested :3 :3

SIMON: you should totally watch it, or like, an analysis of it. totally worth it
now onto my last question, is there any piece of art or media you'd like to recommend to me or the readers? like a movie, album or game?

SAMLRC: hmm i'm not sure if ur into this genre of music but i'd love to share Battle Of Mice - A Day Of Nights, i absolutely love the crushing backstory and the production behind it, makes everything so unique and heartbreaking specially with the desperate singer performance
plus it is post-metal and sludge metal, i wanted to share it because it's so special for me and i hate the fact that this record is so underrated
i also love to call it 'bjork in a metal band'

SIMON: omg, love the 'bjork in a metal band' description. it sounds really interesting, specially since i'm not very familiar with sludge metal but i've always wanted to get into it. i'll definitely check out!!

SIMON: thanks again for talking to me! i admire you a lot, you're one of the most talented people i've ever met. is there anything else you'd like to say?

SAMLRC: aww i wanted to thank you too!! i always wanted to do something like that and it was quite awesome :3 :3 thanks for realizing sheep dreammm

SIMON: you're welcome <3 maybe we can do it again some time!

That was the interview! Thank you for reading, and as I said, you can check out her album and support her directly here:
