Top 10 Romantic Songs

You know, I'm a very romantic person. Unfortunately, a hopeless one, kinda like Ted Mosby (which I do know is a red flag). A good example of that is my specific affection towards genuinely romantic songs, those with earnestly wholesome or quirky lyrics, and to show that (and also because of one of these songs being stuck on my head) I've decided to write a top 10 list of my favorite romantic songs.

They'll be Ranked in a scale of romantic-ness, quantified by myself. You'll understand while reading. So, without further ado, here's the list.

10- Beachwood Sparks - By Your Side

This song, which was famously included in the Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World soundtrack, is actually a cover of Sade, but I think most would agree that this version is the superior one, particularly because of the instrumental, which sounds simply heavenly. This song makes anyone feels safe and loved even if they don't have anyone in their life.

9- Plumtree - Aquarius

Hey, look, it's my favorite band! This is probably Plumtree's most romantic song. It opens with a very cute verse:

"I used to think things a little differently

I used to think I'd never find someone like me

Used to wonder about everything under the sea

And 'bout changes, perhaps you can see"

The song adds to the band's signature "profound adolescent" tone, with a narrative that is clearly simple and mundane but using wording that makes it seem more poetic (which I absolutely adore).

8- Weezer - Falling for You

First Weezer appearance on the list but certainly not the last, it's Falling For You, from the infamous best album of all time. I don't know if I should explain this one, since the lyrics are clear enough. It's the usual self-pity-induced love confession present throughout most of the album, but turned up a notch, and definitely more upfront in its romance. Some people might find it a little too much, but I personally find it very cathartic, as if Rivers finally found someone to settle down and be happy (also, if someone asks, yes this is my favorite Weezer song).

7- Mars Argo - A-Okay

This song is almost the musical equivalent of Love Exposure because it shows how love always wins in the end. The narrator tells us how she was taught to choose money and success over true happiness, but finds her footing as she meets someone who makes her feel understood and truly happy. It's also a very optimistic song despite its harsher sound, which is rare.

6- Alanis Morrissette - Head Over Feet

This cuts the list purely because of the lyrics. Like, come on, this is is the pinnacle of cuteness. It's about someone whom the narrator loves, who is not usually her type but is so good to her that she's moved by him immediately. The lyrics are also very upfront (alongside the MV which is literally Alanis facing the camera and mouthing the lyrics along), as if she's singing directly to this person and saying how glad she is that he's there at all.

I know this is kind of a cliché and Alanis is really mainstream but I'd love to sing this to someone someday :').

5-  Mineral - Wakingtowinter

I only need to show you this verse:

"So that when I'm driving home at night

Tired frustrated and pinned down by spite

I'm reminded of your love

Unlike these things will never change

Or fade or pass away"

Endserenading is amazingly beautiful. This verse is sung in such a tender and beautiful way... Almost makes me tear up.

4- Spoon - Nobody Gets Me But You

Ah, yes. Spoon's underrated album. So underrated, in fact, that I couldn't even find it in Soulseek. Honestly, it might be one of my favorite albums of all time (I gotta remember that when I update my topster), and the last track just wraps everything up perfectly. It captures very well that feeling of being misunderstood by everyone except for one person. Even though this is what the lyrics tell, the song sounds hopeless, also because it's the last one on the album, sounding more like a bitter acceptance than a breath of relief. But still, it does sound very romantic to me.

3- Neko Case - Calling Cards

This song sounds like a tale of lost lovers from a 60's film set in the american countryside. This is also helped by the music video (which is one of my favorites) with the 60's americana vibe. It sounds almost utopic, fantastically romantic, something we can only dream of witnessing. It is also the song which inspired this post in the first place :D!!!

2- Weezer - Butterfly

One of Rivers' most earnest and beautiful lyrics, Butterfly is one of my favorites out of Pinkerton (which is funny because most guys don't like this one, apparently). The song is tragic, but also somewhat hopelessly romantic, mainly because of the lyrics:

"If I'm a dog then you're a bitch

I guess you're as real as me

Maybe I can live with that (...)"

Which sounds to me like Rivers finally found someone who he sees as an equal. Also, according to a genius user:

"Throughout the album, Rivers refers to himself as a dog who is only in relationships because of sexual attraction or lust.

Here, because his partner called him a dog, he retorts saying, “she’s a bitch.” This is not only a comeback for being called a dog, but a common ground between the two of them. A bitch is defined as a female dog meaning both Rivers and her are dogs together, one and the same and partners.

This is a fitting line to show how Rivers has finally accepted that although he does have tendencies to be a creep, tendencies that are talked about throughout the album, in the end it’s natural and he still found someone who loves him for who he is."

I completely agree with this perspective and it's one of the reasons why I love this song so much ;)

1- Mount Eerie - Crow (or the entirety of A Crow Looked at Me)

And lastly but certainly not least, we have Mount Eerie. I already talked about the last Microphones' album last week, and in that I mentioned A Crow Looked at Me which is definitely the most hauntingly beautiful album I've ever heard. I could honestly put the entire album here but I chose Crow particularly because of the lyrics, which differently from the rest of the album, is written like Phil is talking to his daughter instead of his wife. I honestly don't want to extend myself here, but if you've listened to this already, you know how gorgeous it is, and how that last line breaks anyone who hears it.

Death is real, guys. It truly is.
